GENE NAMEdimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 1
SYNONYMNSDDAH, HEL-S-16
CHROMOSOME1
HOMOLOGENE ID8120
SOURCERAT
PMIDs19015171
GENE SUMMARY
This gene belongs to the dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) gene family. The encoded enzyme plays a role in nitric oxide generation by regulating cellular concentrations of methylarginines, which in turn inhibit nitric oxide synthase activity. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

OBSERVATION
1. The present study demonstrated for the first time that the suppression of ADMA by DDAH overexpression could improve tubulointerstitial ischaemia and subsequent renal damage in experimental diabetic nephropathy. 2. Substitution of DDAH protein or enhancement of its activity may become a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of early diabetic nephropathy.
