GENE SUMMARY |
---|
The protein encoded by this gene, pre-angiotensinogen or angiotensinogen precursor, is expressed in the liver and is cleaved by the enzyme renin in response to lowered blood pressure. The resulting product, angiotensin I, is then cleaved by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to generate the physiologically active enzyme angiotensin II. The protein is involved in maintaining blood pressure and in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension and preeclampsia. Mutations in this gene are associated w |
OBSERVATIONS |

Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Nephropathy | 1. Moreover, the augmented intrarenal AGT mRNA expression paralleled renal dysfunction in patients with diabetes. These data suggest the importance of the activated oxidative stresAGT/RAS axis in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. | 24284398 |
Neuropathy | 1. A D-dominant model hypothesis also gave a significant OR (0.28; 95% CI, 0.09-0.90). ACE I/D polymorphism, but not AGT M235T polymorphism, may affect polyneuropathy development in type 2 diabetes without macroalbuminuria. | 12449516 |
Insulin resistance and inflammation | 1. Severe 60% food restriction (malnutrition), however, stimulated a proinflammatory state and increased AGT and ACE expression in the adipose tissue of mice. | 28779634 |
