GENE SUMMARY
Defensins form a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides made by neutrophils. Members of the defensin family are highly similar in protein sequence. This gene encodes defensin, beta 4, an antibiotic peptide which is locally regulated by inflammation. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

OBSERVATIONS

Complication Evidence PMID
Tuberculosis1. Comparable results were seen with the DEFB4 gene expression, PTB group showed significant higher levels when compared with the control group (p 0.001) or with the LTB group. Intriguingly, levels of DEFB4 were lower in DM2 individuals with latent infection than in NoDM2 patients, which may suggest that these patients could be more susceptible to developing active TB21539878
