GENE SUMMARY |
---|
This gene encodes a secreted extracellular matrix protein that functions in tissue development and regeneration, including wound healing, and ventricular remodeling following myocardial infarction. The encoded protein binds to integrins to support adhesion and migration of epithelial cells. This protein plays a role in cancer stem cell maintenance and metastasis. Mice lacking this gene exhibit cardiac valve disease, and skeletal and dental defects. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Nephropathy | 1. These data demonstrate that periostin is a mediator and marker of tubular dedifferentiation and a promising tissue and urine biomarker for kidney injury in experimental models and in clinical renal disease. | 22167593 |
Retinopathy | 1. We recently demonstrated that M2 macrophages were involved in the development of fibrovascular membranes (FVM) associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) possibly through the induction of periostin | 25355804 |
