GENE SUMMARY
This gene encodes a member of the serine proteise inhibitor (serpin) superfamily. This member is the principal inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase (uPA), and hence is an inhibitor of fibrinolysis. Defects in this gene are the cause of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 deficiency (PAI-1 deficiency), and high concentrations of the gene product are associated with thrombophilia

OBSERVATIONS

Complication Evidence PMID
Nephropathy1.reactive oxygen specoes (ROS) mediate high glucose-induced up-regulation of PAI-1 expression in cultured mesangial cells and in diabetic glomeruli. Since both high glucose and TGF-beta1 induce cellular ROS and ROS mediate both high glucose- and TGF-beta1-induced PAI-1, ROS appear to amplify TGF-beta1 signaling in high glucose-induced PAI-1 up-regulation.15840023
