GENE NAMEsolute carrier family 5 (sodium/glucose cotransporter), member 1
SYNONYMNSNAGT, SGLT1, D22S675
CHROMOSOME22
HOMOLOGENE ID55456
DiseaseType 2 diabetes
PMIDs25690134
GENE SUMMARY
This gene encodes a member of the sodium-dependent glucose transporter (SGLT) family. The encoded integral membrane protein is the primary mediator of dietary glucose and galactose uptake from the intestinal lumen. Mutations in this gene have been associated with glucose-galactose malabsorption. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. OBSERVATIONS
More recently, genetic and pharmacology research in mice has indicated that gastrointestinal SGLT1 inhibition may also be an appropriate therapeutic target to treat diabetes. Combining SGLT1 and SGLT2 inhibition in a single molecule would provide complementary insulin-independent mechanisms to treat diabetes.
