GENE SUMMARY
Heme oxygenase, an essential enzyme in heme catabolism, cleaves heme to form biliverdin, which is subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase, and carbon monoxide, a putative neurotransmitter. Heme oxygenase activity is induced by its substrate heme and by various nonheme substances. Heme oxygenase occurs as 2 isozymes, an inducible heme oxygenase-1 and a constitutive heme oxygenase-2. HMOX1 and HMOX2 belong to the heme oxygenase family. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

OBSERVATIONS

Complication Evidence PMID
Nephropathy1. The findings of this study indicate that increases of urine HO-1 levels can be detected in patients with type 2 diabetes before the onset of significant albuminuria, and associated with renal derangement in patients with established diabetic nephropathy.26733347
Tuberculosis1. Heightened plasma levels of heme oxygenase-1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-4 as well as elevated peripheral neutrophil counts are associated with TB-diabetes comorbidity.24458266
Neuropathy1. In this study, CTGF, HO-1 and NT-3 were highly correlated with type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The conduction velocity of nerve increased with the increase of CTGF, HO-1 and NT-3. Immune cytokine TGF-?1 combined with cattle encephalon glycoside and ignotin injection could improve the contents of CTGF, HO-1 and NT-3, and be better to treat the peripheral neuropathy of type 2 diabetes. 29259937
Insulin resistance and Inflammation1. HMOX1 was upregulated in adipose tissue by obesity as well and expressed predominantly in macrophages.19687791
