GENE SUMMARY
NF-kappa-B is a ubiquitous transcription factor involved in several biological processes. It is held in the cytoplasm in an inactive state by specific inhibitors. Upon degradation of the inhibitor, NF-kappa-B moves to the nucleus and activates transcription of specific genes. NF-kappa-B is composed of NFKB1 or NFKB2 bound to either REL, RELA, or RELB. The most abundant form of NF-kappa-B is NFKB1 complexed with the product of this gene, RELA. Four transcript variants encoding different isoforms

OBSERVATIONS

Complication Evidence PMID
Nephropathy1. Nuclear NF-kappa B p65 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells correlates with urinary MCP-1, RANTES and the severity of type 2 diabetic nephropathy.24936866
Retinopathy1. The present data suggest that hyperglycemia increases O-GlcNAcylation in DR and that O-GlcNAcylation of the p65 subunit of NF-KappaB is involved in hyperglycemia-induced NF-KappaB activation and RGC death in DR.25835259
Insulin resistance and inflammation1. In summary, we identified TCF-4 as a co-activator of p65 in the potentiation of proinflammatory cytokine production in macrophages and aggravation of HFD-induced chronic inflammation and insulin resistance in mice.29509432
