GENE SUMMARY
The protein encoded by this gene is found on the surface of platelets, monocytes, neutrophils, and some types of T-cells, and makes up a large portion of endothelial cell intercellular junctions. The encoded protein is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and is likely involved in leukocyte migration, angiogenesis, and integrin activation. [provided by RefSeq, May 2010]

OBSERVATION
1. CD31, also known as platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1), is a 140?kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is expressed at high levels on early and mature endothelial cells as in capillary microcirculation, but also in human bone marrow stem cells. CD34+KDR+ and CD31+133+ EPC differentiation could have a prognostic and therapeutic significance in the healing process of neuropathic and neuroischemic lesions.
