GENE SUMMARY |
---|
Apolipoprotein C-III is a very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) protein. APOC3 inhibits lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase; it is thought to delay catabolism of triglyceride-rich particles. The APOA1, APOC3 and APOA4 genes are closely linked in both rat and human genomes. The A-I and A-IV genes are transcribed from the same strand, while the A-1 and C-III genes are convergently transcribed. An increase in apoC-III levels induces the development of hypertriglyceridemia. [provided by RefSeq, |

Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Nephropathy | 1. In addition, combinations of genotypes [APOE epsilon3/epsilon3 and LPL 447X+ (OR = 0.56), APOC3 CC and LPL 447X+ (OR = 0.31), APOE epsilon3/epsilon3 and APOC3 CC (OR = 0.61] were protective for DN compared with the most common combination of the respective polymorphisms. | 16813599 |
Cardiovascular | 1. The combination of these roles makes apoC-III an important therapeutic target for the management and prevention of CVD. | 25692924 |
Insulin resistance and inflammation | 1. A validation study involving non-Asian Indian men confirmed the association between APOC3 variant alleles and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. | 20335584 |
