GENE SUMMARY |
---|
This gene encodes catalase, a key antioxidant enzyme in the bodies defense against oxidative stress. Catalase is a heme enzyme that is present in the peroxisome of nearly all aerobic cells. Catalase converts the reactive oxygen species hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen and thereby mitigates the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Oxidative stress is hypothesized to play a role in the development of many chronic or late-onset diseases such as diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer's disease, system |
OBSERVATIONS |

Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Nephropathy | 1. The decrease of CAT activity, one of the most important antioxidant enzymes, following to some genetic defects, may be a risk factor for diabetic nephropathy | 21180245 |
Retinopathy | 1. This proof-of-concept study raises the possibility that augmentation of catalase is a therapy for treating the retinal oxidative stress associated with diabetic retinopathy. | 25813998 |
Insulin resistance and inflammation | 1. The total amount of superoxide dismutase, CAT, and uric acid in the parotid glands of insulin resistance rats were significantly elevated in comparison with the control rats. | 24106991 |
