GENE SUMMARY
The protein encoded by this gene is a surface antigen that is preferentially expressed on monocytes/macrophages. It cooperates with other proteins to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein. OBSERVATIONS

Complication Evidence PMID
Tuberculosis1. Reduced MARCO and CD14 expression contributes to defective sentinel function of alveolar macrophages, promoting tuberculosis susceptibility in diabetic hosts at a critical early step in the immune response to aerosol infection27630197
Insulin resistance and inflammation1. CD14 gene expression was increased in whole adipose tissue and adipocytes from obese humans and further increased after tumor necrosis factor-?. 21700881
