GENE SUMMARY |
---|
Chitotriosidase is secreted by activated human macrophages and is markedly elevated in plasma of Gaucher disease patients. The expression of chitotriosidase occurs only at a late stage of differentiation of monocytes to activated macrophages in culture. Human macrophages can synthesize a functional chitotriosidase, a highly conserved enzyme with a strongly regulated expression. This enzyme may play a role in the degradation of chitin-containing pathogens. Several alternatively spliced transcript |
OBSERVATIONS |
---|
Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Nephropathy | 1. The immunomodulatory effects of chitotriosidase enzyme could be implicated in the development of nephropathy in type 2 diabetes. | 26589000 |
Insulin resistance and inflammation | 1. CHIT1 is expressed by adipose tissue macrophages and expression is higher in overweight subjects and T2D patients, indicating its potential as tissue biomarker for adipose tissue inflammation. | 30301968 |
