GENE SUMMARY |
---|
This gene encodes a highly conserved neurotrophic factor. The recombinant form of this protein was shown to promote the survival and differentiation of dopaminergic neurons in culture, and was able to prevent apoptosis of motor neurons induced by axotomy. The encoded protein is processed to a mature secreted form that exists as a homodimer. The mature form of the protein is a ligand for the product of the RET (rearranged during transfection) protooncogene. Multiple transcript variants encoding d |

Retinopathy | 1. These findings reveal that glial cell-derived cytokines such as GDNF and VEGF regulate BRB function, implying that the glial cell can be a possible therapeutic target in diabetic retinopathy. | 17470563 |
Neuropathy | 1. peripheral GDNF gene delivery ameliorates the diabetes-induced downregulation of the GDNF signaling complex in the peripheral nervous system and holds promises for treatment of diabetic neuropathy. 2. Diabetes can significantly induce enteric neuropathy. This change may be mediated, in partly, via a reduction of GDNF and its main downstream signalling pathway PI3K/Akt, which is a survival signal for enteric neurons. | 19374591 |
