GENE SUMMARY |
---|
The protein encoded by this gene, glutathione S-transferase (GST) theta 1 (GSTT1), is a member of a superfamily of proteins that catalyze the conjugation of reduced glutathione to a variety of electrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. Human GSTs can be divided into five main classes: alpha, mu, pi, theta, and zeta. The theta class includes GSTT1, GSTT2, and GSTT2B. GSTT1 and GSTT2/GSTT2B share 55% amino acid sequence identity and may play a role in human carcinogenesis. The GSTT1 gene is haplotyp |
OBSERVATIONS |
---|
Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Nephropathy | 1. Association of diabetic nephropathy (DN) with the deletion of GSTT1 and GSTM1 genes is well reported. | 20521623 |
Cardiovascular | 1. Genetic absence of the GSTT1 enzyme is an independent and powerful predictor of premature vascular morbidity and death in individuals with type 2 diabetes | 15927971 |
Retinopathy | 1. We may conclude that individuals homozygous for the deletion of GSTT1 are at an 2-fold-greater risk of diabetic retinopathy (DR), whereas the GSTM1 deficiency is associated with lower frequency of DR in type 2 diabetics. | 22377702 |
Atherosclerosis | 1. The GSTT1-0 genotype and GSTT1-0/GSTM1-0 haplotype might be a potential determints of susceptibility to advanced atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. | 22330623 |
