GENE SUMMARY |
---|
This gene encodes a member of the NOX-family of enzymes that functions as the catalytic subunit the DPH oxidase complex. The encoded protein is localized to non-phagocytic cells where it acts as an oxygen sensor and catalyzes the reduction of molecular oxygen to various reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS generated by this protein have been implicated in numerous biological functions including signal transduction, cell differentiation and tumor cell growth. A pseudogene has been identified on |
OBSERVATIONS |
---|
Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Nephropathy | 1. Mechanistically, superoxide production in the intrarenal artery and NOX4 member of NADPH oxidase in the renal cortex that contribute to diabetic nephropathy | 23220173 |
Cardiovascular | 1. Regulating NOX4 activity/expression and using mitochondrial antioxidants are potential approaches to reducing aging-associated CVD. | 26054376 |
Atherosclerosis | 1. Increased mtROS levels were associated with enhanced mitochondrial NOX4 expression in aortic VSMCs from aged subjects, and NOX4 expression levels in arterial wall correlated with age and atherosclerotic severity. | 26054376 |
Retinopathy | 1. This genome-wide association study of severe diabetic retinopathy suggests new evidence for the involvement of the NOX4 gene. | 30178632 |
Insulin resistance and inflammation | 1. Hepatocyte-specific deletion of NOX4 reduced oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and liver fibrosis in mice with diet-induced steatohepatitis. | 25888330 |
