GENE SUMMARY |
---|
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family which plays a fundamental role in pathogen recognition and activation of innate immunity. TLRs are highly conserved from Drosophila to humans and share structural and functional similarities. They recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that are expressed on infectious agents, and mediate the production of cytokines necessary for the development of effective immunity. The various TLRs exhibit dif |
OBSERVATIONS |
---|
Complication | Evidence | PMID |
Atherosclerosis | 1. Genetic deletion of the innate immune receptor TLR9 exacerbated atherosclerosis in ApoE(-/-) mice fed a high-fat diet. CD4(+) T cells were identified as potential mediators of this effect. A type B CpG oligodeoxynucleotide TLR9 agonist reduced lesion severity, thus identifying a novel therapeutic approach in atherosclerosis | 24436372 |
Insulin resistance and inflammation | 1.TLR9-deficient mice gained significantly more weight and body fat under a high-fat diet than wild-type mice and exhibited more severe glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. | 26260403 |
